Listed by Forbes as one of the most educated small towns in the US, Cupertino is best known as the worldwide headquarters of Apple, Inc. and home of its late founder, Steve Jobs. It is a suburban city in Santa Clara County, California, directly west of San Jose on the western edge of the Santa Clara Valley with portions extending into the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains.
Cupertino was named after Arroyo San José de Cupertino (now Stevens Creek), the creek that was named after Saint Joseph of Cupertino by the cartographer of the famed explorer Juan Bautista de Anza.
For the most part of its existence, Cupertino was mostly home to orchards and vineyards. It wasn’t until the 1950′s post-war population and suburban housing boom as the “Valley of Heart’s Delight” was beginning to transform into “Silicon Valley” that the town incorporated. Apple put its headquarters in it in 1976. Although Steve Jobs wasn’t so dramatic about his relationship with his home town, with only an area of 11 square miles, Apple basically put it on the modern map.
All The Right Reasons
Boasting with some of the best schools in the country and an enviably low unemployment and poverty rate, Cupertino natives joke about their city being boring for all the right reasons.
Cupertino is honored to host De Anza College, a 112-acre community college with average fall enrollment of approximately 26,000 students. De Anza offers a variety of day, night and weekend classes in nearly 100 fields of study. De Anza is also ranked among the top three community colleges in the United States for the number of Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degrees awarded. This makes it ideal of anybody thinking of settling down in the city for good.
Cupertino is made up of several subdivisions, many of them developed in the 60s. The neighborhoods of Monta Vista and Rancho Rinconada, for example has been around since electric railways period but was only annexed in 2004 and 199, respectively. Other housing endeavors soon followed. The vibrant community that has emerged then has come to call Cupertino home so much that a huge chunk of the population has been born and breed in the city for most of their lives.
Events
Settling in Cupertino will treat you to some exciting events. One of which is the all-free Summer Concert Series that takes place in Memorial Park, weekly starting in June.
Another interesting event happens during September. It’s the Cupertino Citywide Garage Sale where families choose to pass along usable items to neighbors instead of throwing it to garbage. It is organized on the idea that the fewer materials are send to landfills, the fewer natural resources are wasted. It also means that the less the City spends on disposal and the more money residents make at their garage sale. The city encourages neighbors to work together to hold block sales and multifamily sales. Block Sales and Multi-Family sales tend to draw more attention from customers, and are highlighted on the garage sale promotion material.
The Cupertino Chamber of Commerce hosts the annual Diwali Festival at Memorial Park. This free event showcases multicultural music, dance, arts and crafts, fun, frolic and food. The purpose of this festival is to get together and celebrate intercultural understanding that promotes economic prosperity.
Cupertino has grown into a city that has something for everyone. Whether you are into a laid back lifestyle or you like the rush of modern kinks, Cupertino will treat you to a quality life that you will certainly make you feel at home.
